USA Team Report Back
REPORT ON MISSION TRIP TO KARIBA, ZIMBABWE
JULY / AUGUST 2009
On Sunday, July 26, 2009, a team of eleven people, ten Second Baptist members and one person from North Carolina departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for the Republic of Zimbabwe. The team member from North Carolina, Rev. Denny St. Clair, represented Samaritan’s Purse. Sue and I had the privilege of being a part of that team.
The team was led by Rev. John Kubia and included our pastor, Dr. Jeff LaBorg and daughter Bethanee, Pat and Beth Bembry, Amy Hopper, Adam Schoch, and Jo Teague. As Bro. John Kubia often said – and I paraphrase, “The members of this team were selected by God, not by me.” Well, Sue and I are so glad that God allowed us to be a part of this mission team.
We reached our first stop in Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday evening, after a sixteen hour flight. Johannesburg is the home of the host for our mission trip, Multi Ministries. The director, Dr. Harold Peasley, and his staff, briefed us in preparation for our early flight the next morning. We departed Johannesburg for Harare, Zimbabwe at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, arriving there some two hours later.
There we met Jabulani (you will ‘meet’ him when the team presents their report in the days ahead) and two other Multi Ministries’ ministers. These men gave us time from their families and normal duties to accompany us during our mission, and served as our drivers for the three vehicles that transported us to Kariba, Zimbabwe, our first mission site. However, as we soon learned, they were much more than just drivers. They were a part of the team!
This was the second mission trip for Sue and me, having journeyed to Ulan Ude, Republic of Buryatia in the fall of 2007. It is interesting to note the similarities between that trip and this. We found the Russian people and the African people to be hungry for the Word of God. In addition, the people of Russia and Africa were so eager for us to return. Everywhere we went in the Kariba area, the people seemed reluctant to see us depart.
In Kariba, while Pastor Jeff taught and discipled local pastors, the rest of the team divided up and visited local schools in the area. On Wednesday, Sue and I, along with Jo, Amy and Bethanee visited a government school attended by some 1000 middle-school age students. What a sight to behold as the children ‘flowed’ from the playground to where we would soon impart the gospel message. The head master gave us complete access to the students and placed no restrictions on our gospel sharing.
After Amy and Bethanee opened the service with singing, Jo gave her testimony, and Sue used a soccer ball Denny St. Clair provided to give a graphical presentation of the plan of salvation. Then, I got to tell the students how they could have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by confessing their sins and inviting Jesus to be their Savior and allowing Him to be Lord of their lives.
When we asked the crowd of students if they wanted to pray to receive Jesus, it appeared to me that they all simultaneously raised their hands! At Jo’s suggestion, I told them how our Lord had promised that being His disciple would result in their being persecuted for professing faith in Him. Our interpreter, one of the pastors in Kariba, explained to them what it meant to be persecuted for Christ. Then we asked, “Now, how many of you want to invite Jesus to be Savior and Lord.” Once more, it seemed as if every one of them raised their hands. To God be the glory!
The two days spent in Kariba just set the stage for the rest of our time in Zimbabwe. On Friday we boarded a house boat that would be our home for the next four nights. Each day we visited one of the several villages around Lake Kariba, a lake about the size of our own Great Lakes. What receptions we received! The people of those villages were glad to see us, but they were doubly glad to receive the gospel message of Jesus and His gift of salvation. Multi Ministries provided Bibles for us to give the villagers. Oh, how they loved to get a Bible! One would have thought we had given them gold.
It is not possible to express, in writing, the blessings we received by being a part of this mission to Africa. You must experience it for yourselves. Next year, if the Lord tarries, you will have that opportunity. Pastor Jeff wants to send a team back to Kariba. Start praying now for that team and, God willing, you could be part of it!
Love in Christ,
F.O. and Sue White
